Let me just start by saying, I’m not really a morning person. I have to admit I like my sleep. A lot. But with 2 kids, a job, and an active lifestyle I had to become a morning person.
There are times when I struggle and fight with the alarm clock, but since I developed a morning routine, I find it much easier to motivate myself to get up.
My morning habits help me to set my intentions for the day and give my day a structure. Since my kids are all over the place from the very first minute they wake up, I like to start my day with peaceful me-time before jumping into the daily grind.

Oh and, before we start:If there is only one thing you do in the morning that will make you start the day way more energized, productive, creative, and happy, that is to NOT LOOK AT YOUR PHONE FIRST THING. Click To Tweet
1/ Get Better Sleep
Naturally, the first place to start your day right is to get a good sleep the night before! The lack of high-quality sleep can not only wreck your morning but also slow down your metabolism and therefore negatively affect your weight loss efforts.
Being short on sleep sets your brain up to make bad decisions. It is more likely your sleepy brain might make you tempted to skip your workout because you are too tired, crave for sugary foods or to get takeout for dinner.
Lack of sleep disrupts your hormones as well. It triggers a cortisol spike. Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, signals your body to conserve energy to fuel you while you are awake. That basically means you’re more prone to hang on to fat.
2/ Practise breathwork and express gratitude
Although this one is not directly tied to speeding up your metabolism, it is important to start your day with some mental exercises to clear your headspace and get ready for a new day.
You’ll be amazed at how doing just 5 minutes of morning breathing exercises first thing can transform your energy levels and make you feel so much more awake. So even if you have only 5 minutes, use this time to take some deep breaths in the morning. It relaxes your nervous system and gives you a few moments of peace before jumping into your day.
Jen Austin from ShineYoga suggests this simple breathing meditation:
- Let your breath flow naturally now with no effort at all.
- Take your full attention to your breath.
- Focus completely on your breath, letting everything else drop away.
- Sit here in silent meditation for a minute or as long as you like.
Thre are actually studies that prove a multitude of benefits from expressing gratitude. It can improve your relationships, physical and emotional health, sleep, energy – basically overall happiness.
Try to think of two or three things you feel grateful for as soon as you wake up, before getting out of the bed. If your write it down, even better. Expressing gratitude for a great way to start the day.
3/ Drink warm lemon water
This is an amazing yet simple drink to start your day with.
As we all know, lemon is packed with vitamin C that helps your immunity system to work like a clockwork. Lemon water keeps you hydrated while also boosting your metabolism. It helps you to stay healthy and removes toxins from your body while aiding in the body’s digestive system.
Tip: Try pairing lemon juice with Shungite water. Shungite water is biologically active water with antibacterial and antioxidant effects. Thanks to fullerenes it perfectly hydrates the whole body, washes away allergens, and strengthens the immunity system.
4/ Eat your breakfast
Breakfast is arguably the most important meal of the day and one of the best morning routines you can absorb. Never skip your breakfast!
Quality breakfast provides your body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast – that’s where its name comes from – breaking the fast!
Start your day off with a healthy meal that will give you an energy boost, kick-start your metabolism, and increase your weight loss efforts. The best foods to start your day with are oatmeal, eggs, bananas, Greek yogurt, grapefruit, or berries.
Nutritionists advise eating your breakfast within two hours of waking.
5/ Exercise in the morning
Have you ever heard of Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumptions (EPOC)? According to Acefitness.org, this so-called “afterburn effect” causes your body to burn more calories after your workout, even when you’re sitting at a desk or driving in your car.
There are plenty of studies that show people who exercise in the morning burn more calories than those who exercise at other times of the day. So get up, put that workout gear on and start moving!
A morning workout can be an amazing source of energy, in fact, it does a better job than a cup of coffee!
On top of that, it will improve your focus and mental abilities all day long. Wake up your body and prepare your mind for the day with some morning movement!
6/ Become a morning person
Last but not least – if you want to develop a sustainable morning routine, you will need to start to wake up early enough. Becoming an early riser is one of the best morning routines you can adopt to improve your day in so many ways.
Not all of us are born a morning person but the good news is: it can be learned.
According to Dr. W. Christopher Winter from Sleep Medicine Centre, “your genes determine what we call your ‘chronotype,’ which is if you are a morning or evening person. It’s often similar within families, but it can be influenced to a certain degree.”
Becoming a morning person is so much more than just wanting to be full of energy and awake when you get up. It allows you to use the first few hours in the morning to the fullest and create a healthy routine to start your day off with a positive attitude.
So if you are not a morning person but would like to become one, there are actually simple tricks that can make it easier for you:
- Put yourself on a morning schedule. Meditate, eat and exercise at the same time every day, even on weekends and vacations. Try to resist sleeping in during your free days and keep the same morning schedule every day.
- Don’t use the snooze button. It can be hard to resist hitting it sometimes, but it can hinder your transformation into an early riser. Try using an alarm app that won’t let you turn it off or hit the snooze button until you solve a certain task, e.g. a math problem. There are plenty of these apps available, I recommend checking out Smart alarm or Math alarm.
The Bottom Line
Developing the best morning routine that maximizes your healthy lifestyle while juggling job and all the mom tasks is a trial-and-error process. One size doesn’t fit all and you have to know yourself in order to customize the perfect morning routine that will put you on right track and helps you to reach your health, productivity and fitness goals.
