Let me just start by saying, I’m not really a morning person. I have to admit I like my sleep. A lot. But with 2 kids, a job, and an active lifestyle I had to become a morning person.

There are times when I struggle and fight with the alarm clock, but since I developed a morning routine, I find it much easier to motivate myself to get up.

My morning habits help me to set my intentions for the day and give my day a structure. Since my kids are all over the place from the very first minute they wake up, I like to start my day with peaceful me-time before jumping into the daily grind.

1/ Get Better Sleep

Naturally, the first place to start your day right is to get a good sleep the night before! The lack of high-quality sleep can not only wreck your morning but also slow down your metabolism and therefore negatively affect your weight loss efforts.

Being short on sleep sets your brain up to make bad decisions. It is more likely your sleepy brain might make you tempted to skip your workout because you are too tired, crave for sugary foods or to get takeout for dinner.

Lack of sleep disrupts your hormones as well. It triggers a cortisol spike. Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone,  signals your body to conserve energy to fuel you while you are awake. That basically means you’re more prone to hang on to fat.

Try to think of two or three things you feel grateful for as soon as you wake up, before getting out of the bed. If your write it down, even better. Expressing gratitude for a great way to start the day.

3/ Drink warm lemon water

This is an amazing yet simple drink to start your day with.

According to Dr. W. Christopher Winter from Sleep Medicine Centre, “your genes determine what we call your ‘chronotype,’ which is if you are a morning or evening person. It’s often similar within families, but it can be influenced to a certain degree.”

Becoming a morning person is so much more than just wanting to be full of energy and awake when you get up. It allows you to use the first few hours in the morning to the fullest and create a healthy routine to start your day off with a positive attitude.

So if you are not a morning person but would like to become one, there are actually simple tricks that can make it easier for you:

  • Put yourself on a morning schedule. Meditate, eat and exercise at the same time every day, even on weekends and vacations. Try to resist sleeping in during your free days and keep the same morning schedule every day.
  • Don’t use the snooze button. It can be hard to resist hitting it sometimes, but it can hinder your transformation into an early riser. Try using an alarm app that won’t let you turn it off or hit the snooze button until you solve a certain task, e.g. a math problem.
