The truth is, that no matter how healthy and clean we try to eat, toxins absorb into our bodies as we ingest or inhale. When breastfeeding, you have to be very careful about body cleansing.

For nursing mothers, a regular detox is not recommended mostly because of these two reasons:
- it limits calories and essential food groups, which could decrease your milk supply. Remember: Your body needs nutrients and calories to sustain a healthy milk supply!
- it causes your body to release toxins that have been kept in your cells back into your blood. This means you could easily pass them onto your baby through breastmilk.
Okay okay. Not recommended. Got it.
But what if you still do feel this “urge” to cleanse your body? Is there any all natural body detox product that can help you cleanse your body without endangering your breastmilk?
How to detox safely while breastfeeding
As a new mom, you probably try your best to consume healthy foods and nourish your body so the little one gets all the “goodness” through your breastmilk.
With me, the reason behind my “detox” was not quite this straightforward. I wasn’t initially thinking about cleansing my body.
What motivated me was my newborn son and his skin condition. He suffered from dreadful eczema breakouts all over his little body and nothing seemed to help. The doctors kept saying that he will just “grow out of it” and gave me a steroid cream.
A couple of months went by and I finally refused to pat his skin with chemicals and hormones. I desperately started searching for something natural, that would improve his skin.
A friend of mine recommended a natural remedy specialist, that has already helped her kids with similar skin problems. So I gave it a shot. She explained that eczema is just one of many ways how our bodies try to eliminate toxin burden.
I needed to detoxify my body for two reasons:
- to eliminate passing toxins onto my little one through breastmilk
- to boost the detoxifying process in my son’s body through my breastmilk
That is how I came across this wonderful, miraculous plant: CHLORELLA. The superfood.
And because I’ve tried and tested this all natural body detox product (and I still take it) with some great results, in this post I want to share with you my experience. Because even though “detox” as such is not the best choice for nursing moms, there is a way how to safely cleanse your body.
What is Chlorella?
Chlorella is a freshwater algae with powerful detoxifying properties. It has an impressive nutritional profile, containing highly concentrated amounts of protein, vitamins A, B2, B3, iron, magnesium, and zinc.
This nutrient-packed “superfood” has been receiving a lot of buzz recently for a huge amount of health benefits. Chlorophyll and antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein aren’t considered as compounds that effectively help to remove toxins and fight against many chronic diseases.
And it gets even better:
Not only it cleanses your body gently while breastfeeding, but it was also reported that Chlorella can actually improve the quality of your breastmilk!
Taking chlorella supplements during pregnancy may decrease dioxin content and increase the concentration of some carotenes and immunoglobulin A in breastmilk.
How does it detoxify your body?
Chlorella is high in chlorophyll, which is the substance that makes plants green and photosynthesis possible – the process of converting the sunlight energy into chemical energy that is later used as a fuel.
Similar to hemoglobin in human blood, chlorophyll improves blood oxygenation and this way helps to cleanse the body.
Apart from oxygen, it also has an amazing ability to bind and remove heavy metals from the body. There are several studies that show Chlorella’s ability to bind and remove heavy metals and other harmful compounds from the body.
Finding Quality Chlorella
Not all Chlorella products have the same benefits. In fact, some low-quality supplements can be even dangerous or absolutely useless for the body. Look for the purest form of organic Chlorella, cultivated in a controlled environment to ensure its purity.
The highest quality Chlorella is made by a special method of “breaking the cell wall” which preserves all the nutrients and makes it easier for the body to digest and absorb.
Organic tablet supplement (200 mg tabs) produced with a special low-light, a low-temperature method of breaking the cell wall which delivers maximum nutrient availability. Made from 100% organic Chlorella Vulgaris.
200mg tabs made from pure Chlorella Vulgaris with naturally occurring Chlorella Vulgaris extract (CVE). 100% natural with no binders or excipients of any kind. Chloenergy claims that their supplement is Japan’s No.1) as well as the world’s leader in chlorella culture/production.
500mg capsules from pure, organic and fair trade Chlorella Vulgaris with the broken cell wall. Without any binders, fillers, excipients or carriers.
How much and when?
Depending on the form of Chlorella supplement, it is recommended for adults to take 2-5 grams per day, ideally divided into two or three doses throughout the day rather than all at once. For me, the most convenient way is to take tablets, which is easily measurable.
For the start, it is best to take 1-2 chlorella tablets per day. You can progressively increase your daily dose within 10 days until you reach the recommended daily intake of 10-15 tablets
Always take chlorella before meals, and at least 1 hour before any other medication. Wash it down with pure water. Tea is not suitable as it could inhibit the absorption of iron.
Contraindications and side effects
Because Chlorella is rich in iron and vitamin K, it is not recommended for people who suffer from hemochromatosis (an iron disorder in which the body loads too much iron) and for those who are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners). Please always remember to consult your doctor if you are not sure!
Because Chlorella can stimulate intestinal activity, you can experience bloating or diarrhea the first days of taking it. This discomfort doesn’t last more than a few days.
Chlorella is one of the most ancient food plants on Earth. Speaking in terms of natural remedies and phytochemistry, it is definitely a gem. It is almost hard to believe that this tiny, fresh-water phytoplankton is stocked with so much goodness!
Although I was skeptical at first, after six months of taking Chlorella I’ve got to confess it has had surprising effects not only on my body but on my baby’s as well.
My son s skin condition has improved a lot. I mean, eczema has not vanished, it is still there. But it is definitely less severe than it was.
My skin has cleared up and my digestion is like clockwork. My milk supply has not changed or decreased. There were these funny moments after I increased the dose and my milk turned green for about a day or so. But I wouldn’t perceive this any negatively. According to this study, some green discoloration of breastmilk is normal.
