As much as I hate weighing myself, one of my New Years goals was to overcome this “fear” and be ready to step on scales with confidence. Whatever result it may show.
And, because I have been so good this year :), Santa has brought me a digital scale. To be honest, to call it “only” a scale would be a bit undervalued – it is a smart body composition analyzer.
Boy, I must have been really good I guess 🙂
In a nutshell
TANITA InnerScan Dual (RD-953) is more than just a set of scales. It has become my new, honest friend. This device is able to track 11 different body measurements, including body fat and muscle mass, BMI or visceral fat.
The Bluetooth connection allows you to follow your progress on your iPhone or Android device.
Display with three backlit color indicators is pretty much user-friendly. It’s actually a traffic light alert system (green, yellow and red) which I think is quite understandable for anyone. As long as your measurements are green, you are doing good.
The price tag is a bit higher than many other scales, but if you’re serious about your weight loss journey, or you’re a fitness nerd and your budget allows, I’d definitely go for it. It is an impressive set of scales.

What is TANITA body composition analyzer?
The manufacturer claims it the first consumer body composition monitor in the world that has bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) technology.
I know. What the heck is that?
Put simply, it’s a technology that provides an in-depth body analysis and allows you to track 10 different body measurements, from visceral fat to muscle mass.
BIA technology works by passing a weak current across the feet to measure body composition. It is said to be one of the most reliable ways to measure body composition in fast, easy to use and non-invasive way. It analyzes the body’s cellular data to determine the quality of muscle tissue, like the density of muscle fiber and the amount of water and fat.
What does all the data mean?
Apart from your weight (obviously), TANITA RD-953 records another 10 body composition measurements. To save you some time googling, let’s explain them briefly, so you’ll know how to read the records.
Body mass index (BMI)
BMI stands for the ratio between your weight and height. It’s an easy way to perform screening that indicates your weight category: underweight, normal or healthy weight, overweight, and obese.
Body fat percentage
It is the proportion of fat to total body weight. A healthy body fat percentage is 8 to 17% for men and 15 to 24% for women.
The weight of the muscles in the body. When you exercise regularly, your muscle mass increases. The more muscles you have, the more calories your body burns, which is reflected in increased BMR (Basal Metabolism Rate). Plain and simple: more muscle = less body fat.
Base Metabolic Rate (BMR)
The daily minimum amount of calories your body needs when resting (including sleeping) in order to function effectively. BMR increases as you build more muscle mass. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body requires when resting.
Body Water Percentage
The proportion of body liquids to the total body weight. The healthy body water level should be 45-60% for women and 50-65% for men.
Muscle Quality Score
This measurement indicates the state of muscle which changes depending on your age and fitness. High-quality muscle contains more dense fiber with little fat, water, and connective tissue.
This data will give you an idea of what kind of physical health you are in using your BMR. If your metabolic age is lower than your actual age, it means your body is in good condition. On the other hand, higher metabolic age can be a sign of health problems and a need to change your lifestyle.
This measurement shows the weight of bones in your body. This doesn’t change over a short period of time, so no need to check daily. Physical activity and a healthy lifestyle contribute to bone tissue development.
Daily Caloric intake (DCI)
This data gives you an idea about how many calories you can consume daily to maintain your current weight. It is a sum of your BMR, daily activity metabolism, and energy required for digestion.
This is the type of body fat that’s stored within the abdomen, near liver, stomach, and intestines. High level of visceral fat increases the risk of various health problems.
Assesses your muscle and body fat levels and gives you insight on what body type you currently have on a scale 1 to 9 (9 being the best rating).

Who is it for
Anyone, who is attempting to lose fat, to get toned or gain some muscle but wants to keep detailed track about their progress. If you are trying to get into shape and you know the total weight number isn’t the only value you should fix your eyes on.
And because TANITA can detect even small changes inside your body over a relatively short period of time, it can become your great motivator. It shows you if your workouts and a healthy diet are working even when it is too early to see the changes in the mirror.
It definitely can become a health indicator of all your family members, as the superb list of data should help to paint a full picture of anyone’s health.
Why I love it
As I already mentioned, I’m kind of stressed out when I have to weight myself. Even when I know I’m doing my best to get back into shape. But since having these scales, it has become much easier for me to check my weight.
Because even if it sometimes seems that I’ve hit the weight plateau, I always see some positive changes when looking into other specs. It just motivates me so much to see my body fat percentage to drop a little every time I weigh myself.
And what keeps me even more excited is the muscle mass stats going up!
Another great thing about this body composition scale is Bluetooth connectivity. I like the Healthy Edge app layout. It is simple, yet appealing and so easy to use.
At first, you can feel a bit overwhelmed by all the at-a-glance stats it displays, but you will learn quickly what measurements are the most important for you in terms of your goals.
These are the stats that I care about the most when tracking my progress (except for weight):
- body fat %
- muscle mass %
- basal metabolism rate
These three measurements correlate very closely. Increasing muscle mass will speed up your BMR. Higher BMR leads to reducing body fat as your body requires more calories to function.
The rest of the stats that TANITA RD-953 offers are mostly related to your health or well-being and don’t change so often.
Well, yes. It is a lot to pay for a set of scales. But on the other hand, it can be pretty motivating as well, huh? Like buying those skinny jeans that you don’t fit into (yet).
I mean, if you’ve paid so much for it, you gotta make full use of it! This pricey yet sophisticated device will push you to check your weight regularly and become familiar with how excess fat affects your body.
I’ve seen someone complaining about having a hard time to understand the stats that are being recorded.
To be honest:
It can feel a little overwhelming at first, but once I started to use the App, I got a good grasp of what the data mean and how do they correlate. And I don’t have a degree in sports physiology 🙂
If you find it just way too much to pay for a set of scales, you can choose from the variety of similar, great quality body composition monitors that won’t stretch your budget that much. <
Both Fitbit and Nokia offer Wi-Fi connectivity and track various measurements, although not as many as TANITA.

Sometimes, we are prone to quit too soon if we don’t see the results in the mirror right away. Seeing how my healthy lifestyle causes all the changes inside my body is amazingly motivating and makes me want to stay on track.
I can’t say I’m getting excited about stepping on scales now.
